    YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne

In an effort to support the Y’s work with individuals with intellectual and developmental abilities, their families and caregivers, the AWS Foundation awarded a $2 million gift to help build the new Jackson R. Lehman Family YMCA in Fort Wayne.

In addition to the traditional amenities a Y offers, this Y will feature an accessible warm water therapy pool, and a 6-lane 25 yard lap pool. Both will be accessible by zero depth entry ramps.  Additionally, a sensory room, family changing room and adaptive equipment will provide recreational and social opportunities for adults and children of all ability levels.

The foundation also funded hiring a Director of Adaptive Services who focuses on how the Y can best serve the nearly 20,000 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families who live within the service area of the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne.

This position provides research, support, and guides the development of community-wide programs at all 8 YMCA locations specifically for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families and other service providers. The Director of Adaptive Services is a key resource for local YMCA’s in Allen, Whitley and Wells counties improving the quality of life for everyone by making the Y available to all.

For more information about the adaptive programs the Y has to offer, contact Lydia Morris, Director of Adaptive Services at 260-755-4961 or by email at Lydia_Morris@fwymca.org.
